Chronic Pain : Homeopathic Remedies for Sprains & Strains

Anyone who exercises, whether a weekend warrior or a professional athlete, will be sidelined by the occasional sprain or strain. The tried and true RICE remedy -- rest, ice, compression, and elevation -- should be your go-to for injuries that involve pain and swelling. But a few homeopathic remedies may help speed recovery. A carefully selected remedy that best matches your symptoms can naturally aid the healing process. Homeopathic remedies have no side effects or contraindications and they're safe for the very young as well as the very old.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the following homeopathic rememdies are recommended for sprains and strains. Keep them in your gym bag for quick and easy access.

Topical arnical is generally considered the top choice for treating an acute injury. You should not use arnica, however, if the skin has an open wound over the injured area. For injuries with swelling, brusing, and inflammation, consider internal arnica.

Consider this remedy for swollen injuries that get worse with movement. Bryonia is especially useful for chest, shoulder, and hamstring injuries.

Try ledum for sprained ankles that feel cold or numb but improve with cold applications (such as ice) and worsen with warm applications.

Rhus toxicodendron
This remedy isused after the initial symptoms of an injury have improved (such as from using arnica). Rhus toxicodendron is especially appropriate for lifting or overexertion injuries.

Ruta may be effective for tendonitis, torn ligaments, and other injuries that feel hot to the touch. It is also useful for overexertion injuries, such as tennis elbow and runner's knee.
